Welcome from Head of Food & Tourism Management
Dear colleagues,
I have great pleasure in welcoming you to the 2015 EuroCHRIE conference hosted by the Hollings Faculty at Manchester Metropolitan University.
This is a perfect time for Manchester to be hosting this conference as the local hospitality and tourism industry is enjoying great success and the UK government has identified Manchester as the focus of its ‘Northern Powerhouse’ policy under which many central government powers will be devolved to local government in Greater Manchester.
The Hollings Faculty is one of the largest and longest established Hospitality and Tourism schools in the UK. However, our focus is on the future not the past. All of our programmes have been reviewed over the past 12 months. Our new BSc Hospitality Business Management programme was written jointly with industry partners and many taught sessions take place within local hotels and restaurants with hospitality professionals providing ‘masterclasses’ as part of the core curriculum.
We have launched a new degree in Food Business Entrepreneurship rooted in the principles of sustainability. Our new Food Product Development Lab and Food Sensory Suite are being increasingly used by chefs as well as food companies. In February 2015, we ran a student competition called ‘Our Future Food’ in India with the support of food campaigner Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
Our students benefit from the Hollings commitment to internationalisation and from our excellent partnerships with institutions in the USA, Canada, Australia, Malaysia, Austria, Switzerland, Romania, France and Finland.
I hope you will find the conference stimulating and enjoyable and that you will take away great memories of Manchester.
